It’s a common question, whether colouring or cutting your hair when you are wearing hair extensions is safe.
The short answer is yes, you can. But there are many things you have to consider – including having a professional, experienced, and qualified team like Elite on your side!
(If you are opting for our most luxe hair extensions option, Great Lengths, keep in mind that Great Lengths hair extensions come in 60+ shades and the colour combinations and matches are really endless.)
Your own hair may have 2-3 different tones, so we will often select a couple of different shades of extensions so that the strands match your own hair naturally and seamlessly. Highlights and low-lights can also be added into your extensions if you want more depth and tone without colouring your own hair.
Colouring your hair with extensions
If you do want to colour your hair, this can be done at its own dedicated appointment prior to having your extensions applied.
During the life of your extensions, it is also possible to have a foil freshen up in what we call the “freezone” or the top of your head where the hair extensions have not been placed. As trained Great Lengths professionals, we are skilled and qualified to do this properly.
We can also perform a global colour (painted onto the whole head by hand) while you wear your extensions
As we always say, the only things that should touch your bonds are your shampoo and your extensions brush. This ensures they stay at optimum condition and helps to avoid matting and unecessary damage.
On the topic of avoiding damage to your hair extensions, remember that the lengths and ends of extensions are more prone to becoming dry if they are not taken care of appropriately. This includes daily hydration in the form of a highly quality oil, and regular treatments in salon.
Cutting your hair with extensions
When your extensions are first applied, your extensionist will cut, style, and blend them so that they match perfectly with your natural hair.
We actually do recommend a small trim after wearing your extensions for a couple of months (timing depends on how well you have cared for them!). This allows us to remove any dryness or split ends caused by dehydration or excessive heat styling without heat protection. So, if you want to keep those lengths as long as possible, follow our after care advice!
If you want to dramatically change your hair style whilst wearing extensions (for example, a new fringe or additional layers), we can usually acommodate for this but it’s normally best to make these changes before having your extensions applied.
Hair extensions colouring and cutting no-no’s
If you caught our post this week on Instagram on this same topic, you will know what we don’t want…
What we don’t want to see is our beautiful guests with their beautiful new tresses going to a hairstylist who is untrained in colouring and cutting hair extensions. While it may be convenient for you, it has the potential to cause irreversible damage to your extensions. And nobody wants that!
Your extensions take time, money, and a fair amount of commitment in your hair care regime. When you visit us at Elite, we provide a high end service and in return, you agree to taking care of your beautiful hair.
Why it’s important to take care of your extensions
No matter the brand or application style of hair extensions you choose, your hair care routine could be the difference between a really positive or a really negative experience.
Now, in terms of Great Lengths, they are the only hair extension company in the world that oversees the complete supply chain. This means that they can assure the ethical supply of hair, from three specific temples in India. The long standing relationship that Great Lengths has built with these templs ensures that all funds exchanged for the hair go directly to supporting the local community.
Great Lengths hair extensions not only look and feel great, but they are ‘guilt-free’ too. It is an honour for us to be able to apply this precious hair to your own, and we can only hope that all of our guests will treat their new hair with the respect it deserves.
If you’d like to know more about this process, you can visit the Great Lengths website here.
